Posted by david buddy on February 29, 2016 at 4:50 PM Comments comments (0)

Ubuntu Classic 16.04 Beta 1 is the latest developmental release of Ubuntu Classic based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Ubuntu Classic 16.04 Beta 1 Features updated software over Ubuntu Classic 16.04 Alpha and Ubuntu Classic 15.10.

Desktop Environment

Ubuntu Classic 16.04 Beta 1 features gnome-flashback version 3.18.2 which has been updated from previous versions of Ubuntu.

Gnome Desktop versions in Ubuntu Classic:

15.10 feb2016
16.04 Alpha 16.04 Beta 1
3.17.2 3.18.1 3.18.2

File Manager

Ubuntu Classic continues to use the Nautilus or "Files" file manager. The GNOME Team has decided to make some interface changes to Nautilus from 3.14 to 3.16 to 3.18. In version 3.16 the GNOME team implemented larger icons to the Nautilus File Manager and then in 3.18 the "Other Locations" folder was added.

Left to right: Nautilus 3.14.2, Nautilus 3.16.2, Nautilus 3.18.5 All running on Ubuntu Classic 15.10 (right click -> open in a new tab to see larger image)

In Ubuntu Classuc 16.04 Beta 1 Nautilus has been uplifted to version 3.18.2 from 3.14.3.

Nautilus version in recent Ubuntu Classic releases:

15.10 feb2016 15.10 mar2016(Planned) 16.04 Alpha 16.04 Beta 1
3.14.2 3.16.2 3.14.3 3.18.2

 Other Updates

Other updates that don't deviate too much from what Canonical is doing with Ubuntu.

Libreoffice has been updated to 5.1 from 5.0.

15.10 feb2016
16.04 Alpha 16.04 Beta 1

Firefox is still 44.0.2 across all versions, although soon Firefox 45 will be released.

15.10 feb2016
16.04 Alpha 16.04 Beta 1
44.0.2 44.0.2

I don't have the exact versions of the kernels for the Alpha build but these are (probably) the right versions for 15.10 feb2016 and 16.04 Beta 1

15.10 feb2016
16.04 Alpha 16.04 Beta 1 4.4.0.?.?

Other than that there really isn't anything too interesting to talk about other than that 15.10 (should be) using the GNOME 3.16 stack, while 16.04 (should be) using the 3.18 GNOME stack.

Ubuntu Classic 16.04 Alpha is now avaliable for download,  it is based on the daily build of Ubuntu and is really for testing purposes only. So far everything seems to be ok just the file manager (Nautilus 3.14.3) is pretty buggy and has issues with opening menus in the GNOME-Flashback desktop enviorments (Appears worse in compiz than Metacity).

This Alpha build includes:

- Nautilus 3.14.3-0ubuntu1

- Firefox 44.0.2

- Thunderbird 38.5.1

- Libreoffice

- Linux Kernal 4.4.0-4-generic

Ubuntu Classic 15.04

So the Ubuntu Classic ISO's for 15.04 have been released, its nothing to out of the ordinary except that I have downgraded "Files" (Nautilus) from the original 3.14 version to 3.10.1-0ubuntu16, aka the package of nautilus that was in use before the GNOME 3.14 stack was introduced to vivid. This was mainly a test to test out the new Live CD creator that I am using now because Remastersys doesn't work on anything later than 14.04, so now I am using Systemback. Systemback appears to have faster installation speeds but the installation process is not a mock up of the Ubuntu style installation so it is a bit different, but this is key to get us working with Ubuntu 16.04 as of course software that produces usable ISO's a must. Next stop Ubuntu 16.04 Alpha!

Here are the ISO's for 15.04 just to play around with them (even though the OS entered EOL 11 days ago):

Hello again! Sorry if it has been so long. Development on UC 1.3 (Based on 12.10) and UC 1.4 (Based on 13.10) have been terminated for a while now. UC 2.0 (Based on 14.04) will be the next LTS and has been renamed from 2 to 14.04 to match with the Ubuntu release/version naming system.

Hello everyone, I just want to tell you that now I will be trying to release development builds for Ubuntu Classic 1.3 which will turn into 1.4 when it is stable. Currently its based on 12.10, however I am planning on porting it to 13.10, so probably 2 more builds after this one (in total 3) will be based on 12.10. We will see how many builds it will take for the 13.10 version but hopefully if everything goes as planned it will be 3 builds for 12.10 and 2 builds for 13.10.

You can find dev builds for Ubuntu Classic at the bottom of the downloads section, that link will take you to another page with all the dev builds listed on it.

 Happy Testing :)
